To say we live in interesting times is an understatement at the moment. There seems to be a lot of volatility in share markets at the moment, with lots of “jitters”. It seems that the slightest bit of bad news sends the market falling, only to see some recovery when people have time to reassess, and on occasions, only to see a further down turn when people “reassess their reassessment”. Probably a good word would be “over-reaction” – and by that I mean both on the downside and the upside – leading to unusual volatility in the market place.

I thought a brief “one pager” of reassurance would be in order.

As a general comment, basically, our client’s portfolios have been set up with the possibility of volatility in mind. So although we can never anticipate WHEN volatile times are going to occur, we can be SURE that they WILL occur. Your plans and investments have been designed with this inevitable event in mind (some contingency planning). But, as in all things, we need to seek a balance. If we knew with certainty that a downturn would occur next week, we would transfer all your investments into cash, and then buy back after the downturn. But we don’t and no-one does. Therefore, the best we can do is to incorporate into our portfolios various scenarios and contingency plans. Inevitably, this will mean that the returns you receive is nowhere near as good as they could have been had we had perfect foreknowledge (which of course we can never have).

At KLM we concentrate on strategically getting the best result for you. Markets perform erratically at times, and we can’t predict when this will occur.

Please have a read, and, as usual, if you would like to discuss anything in person, the team at KLM Financial Planning is only a phone call away.
